Intro to Hybrid Writing

A virtual, asynchronous workshop

This introduction to hybrid writing covers a broad (but not exhaustive!) range of approaches to and strategies for incorporating elements from other artistic mediums into your writing. 

The ninety-minute workshop is broken up into four segments, across four categories of hybrid works: 

1. prose poetry/lyric essays,
2. audio art that combines sounds/music with text/narration,
3. visual works that blend aspects of drawing, photography, collage, and art installations with text, and
4. writing that incorporates “non-artistic” disciplines, like history, science, and math.

I share examples of impactful hybrid writing by writers and artists like George Abraham, Starr Davis, Tongo Eisen-Martin, Sophie, Gabrielle Civil, Mita Mahato, Ro Daniels, makalani bandele, and more. I also talk about concrete strategies you can take away from their work to apply in your own writing.

Finally, I share some of my own pieces, and talk briefly about my process for creating them, as well as offer up short, generative prompts at the end of each section that you can take with you beyond the workshop.
